چکیده

Glossary Amplitude modulation Refers to a signal in which changes in amplitude carry sensory information. Corollary discharge Refers to a copy of a motor command that is sent from motor areas to sensory areas in the brain. It is often used to predict and eliminate sensory responses to self-generated stimuli. Electrosense Ability to detect electric fields. A passive electrosense is one in which external electric fields are detected, whereas an active electrosense is one in which self-generated electric fields are detected. Feedback Refers to projections from central brain areas back to more peripheral sensory areas. Frequency modulation Refers to a signal in which changes in instantaneous frequency carry sensory information. Information theory Refers to the mathematical theory of communication developed by Claude Shannon that is used in a variety of applications today. Neural code Refers to the patterns of neural activity and transformations by which sensory input to motor outputs to give rise to behavioral responses by the organism. Phase locking Refers to the tendency of certain neurons to fire at a preferred phase of a periodic signal. Rate code Refers to a neural code in which information is carried solely by the firing rate (i.e., the number of action potentials per unit time) of a neuron. Temporal code Refers to a neural code in which information is carried by the specific timings of action potentials.

Multisensory enhancement of electromotor responses to a single moving object.

Weakly electric fish possess three cutaneous sensory organs structured in arrays with overlapping receptive fields. Theoretically, these tuberous electrosensory, ampullary electrosensory and mechanosensory lateral line receptors receive spatiotemporally congruent stimulation in the presence of a moving object. The current study is the first to quantify the magnitude of multisensory enhancement ...

Encoding of social signals in all three electrosensory pathways of Eigenmannia virescens.

Extracting complementary features in parallel pathways is a widely used strategy for a robust representation of sensory signals. Weakly electric fish offer the rare opportunity to study complementary encoding of social signals in all of its electrosensory pathways. Electrosensory information is conveyed in three parallel pathways: two receptor types of the tuberous (active) system and one recep...

Information-processing demands in electrosensory and mechanosensory lateral line systems.

The electrosensory and mechanosensory lateral line systems of fish exhibit many common features in their structural and functional organization, both at the sensory periphery as well as in central processing pathways. These two sensory systems also appear to play similar roles in many behavioral tasks such as prey capture, orientation with respect to external environmental cues, navigation in l...

Distribution of Kv1-like potassium channels in the electromotor and electrosensory systems of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

The electromotor and electrosensory systems of the weakly electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus are model systems for studying mechanisms of high-frequency motor pattern generation and sensory processing. Voltage-dependent ionic currents, including low-threshold potassium currents, influence excitability of neurons in these circuits and thereby regulate motor output and sensory filtering. Alt...

Chapter 41 - Electroreceptors and Magnetoreceptors

Many animals have the ability to detect electric and magnetic fields. Although many species respond and orient to magnetic stimuli, only recently were putative vertebrate receptor systems identified. All organisms generate weak electric fields in water, due to an uneven distribution of ions between the interior of the organism and the external aqueous environment. Ampullary electroreceptors are...

Electrosensory interference in naturally occurring aggregates of a species of weakly electric fish, Eigenmannia virescens.

The detection and identification of behaviorally relevant signals in the presence of competing signals in the environment is a major challenge of animal sensory systems. In weakly electric fish such as Eigenmannia virescens, the interactions between the autogenous electric field and the electric fields of nearby conspecifics can have profound effects on the perception of other behaviorally rele...
